What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is the single unit the entire trade estimates, quotes, and orders in. Once you understand it, every other roofing number — bundles, rolls, prices — falls into place.
The definition
A roofing square is exactly 100 square feet of roof surface — a 10-foot by 10-foot area. It is not a square foot, and it is not related to your home's floor area. Contractors quote labor by the square, suppliers price shingles by the square, and estimates are written in squares. When a roofer says your roof is 24 squares, they mean 2,400 square feet of roof surface.
Why the trade uses it
The square exists to keep material math clean. Shingles are packaged so that a whole number of bundles covers one square: three bundles of 3-tab or four bundles of architectural shingles. Underlayment, starter strip, and other materials are also rated by how many squares they cover. Working in squares means a roofer can glance at a roof size and know the order instantly, without converting square feet every time.
Converting roof area to squares
Take your true roof area — that is, the area after applying the pitch multiplier, not just the footprint — and divide by 100, then round up. A 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares. A 2,650 sq ft roof is 27 squares once rounded up. Always round up, because you cannot buy a partial square of material and you want a little spare for repairs.
Squares are not the same as house size
This trips up a lot of homeowners. Your roof is almost always larger than your home's floor area, for two reasons: the pitch makes the sloped surface longer than the footprint, and the roof extends past the walls as overhangs. A 2,000 sq ft single-story home might have a 2,400 sq ft roof — 24 squares — once pitch and overhangs are counted. A steeper roof widens that gap further, and a multi-story home's roof can actually be smaller than its total living area.
How squares drive your whole order
Once you know your square count, the rest of the estimate is multiplication. Field shingles are squares times three or four. Underlayment is area divided by roll coverage. Even cost is squares times your price per square. This is why the full calculator reports squares prominently — it is the number everything else hangs off.
