Concrete & clay tile calculator

Tile is estimated by pieces per square, and the count swings widely by profile — so the profile is the first thing to pin down.

Pieces per square

A concrete S-tile (about 12 3/8" × 17") runs roughly 89 pieces per square; flat tile is similar at about 90. Clay and barrel profiles vary, and large interlocking tiles need far fewer pieces. Always confirm against your product's published coverage.

Profile matters most

Larger interlocking tiles cover more area each, so fewer are needed; small plain tiles need many more per square. Two tile roofs of the same area can differ by hundreds of pieces purely on profile.

Suitable pitches

Clay and concrete tile generally need at least 2½:12 with a doubled underlayment, and 4:12 is more typical. Tile is not a low-slope material.

Weight is the catch

Tile is heavy — often several times the weight of asphalt per square. Before specifying tile on an existing home, confirm the roof structure supports it, and expect a permit since the dead load changes.

Lifespan and cost

Tile can last for generations, well beyond asphalt, which offsets its higher cost and weight over the long run. Pricing varies too much by region and profile to publish — use your own rate in the cost estimator.

Trade-offs

Outstanding longevity, fire resistance, and curb appeal — against high weight, higher cost, brittleness underfoot, and the structural requirements that come with the load.
