3-tab vs architectural shingles
The two most common asphalt shingle types differ in weight, appearance, lifespan, wind resistance, and — importantly for estimating — how many bundles cover a square. Here is how to tell them apart and which to plan for.
How they differ in construction
3-tab shingles are a single, flat layer with cutouts that create three even tabs across each shingle, giving a uniform, repeating look. Architectural shingles — also called laminated or dimensional shingles — bond two or more layers together, creating a thicker, textured, three-dimensional appearance. That extra material is the root of almost every other difference between them, from weight to lifespan to bundle count.
Coverage: the estimating difference
Because architectural shingles are heavier and multi-layered, they take four bundles per square rather than the three bundles per square of 3-tab. On a 20-square roof that is 80 bundles of architectural versus 60 of 3-tab — a real difference in your order and budget. The calculator switches the bundle count automatically when you pick the type, so the most important thing on your end is correctly identifying which you have.
Lifespan and durability
Architectural shingles are thicker, carry longer manufacturer warranties (often 30–50 years prorated versus shorter terms for 3-tab), and generally hold higher wind ratings. In storm-prone and coastal areas, impact-resistant architectural shingles installed with a six-nail pattern are the common recommendation, while 3-tab is increasingly treated as a budget or rental-grade choice. Actual lifespan still depends heavily on ventilation, sun exposure, and installation quality, not just the shingle grade.
Appearance
From the street, architectural shingles read as dimensional, with shadow lines and a varied, slate-like texture that most homeowners now prefer. 3-tab shingles look flat and uniform with a visible repeating tab pattern. If you are matching an existing roof or working within an HOA's rules, the look may decide the choice for you before cost or durability does.
Which should you estimate for?
If you are not sure which type your roof has, look closely: architectural shingles appear three-dimensional and irregular, while 3-tab shingles are flat with evenly spaced tabs. Pick the matching type in the calculator so the bundle math is right — getting this wrong throws your whole order off by a quarter.
